Rave On Lori Lee Howdy Lori and welcome to the latest Robot Roundup. This is a massive Roundup and it includes all the news on the upcoming GreazeFest.
I first started typing this Roundup back in February. Back then I was shaping a mountain of paperwork and ideas into action for the new GreazeFest and I’m still carving, so that Feb Roundup just didn’t happen. I guess if a Roundup had of gone out, there would have been more of you at last Saturday night’s vintage r’n’b gig with Mick Hadley & The Others at The Step Inn. This was a trip back to 1968 with a wall of fuzz guitar driven Purple Hearts songs. Mick Hadley should be declared a national rock’n’roll treasure. He belted out those 60s songs with the energy and enthusiasm of a 19 year old who has just discovered The Yardbirds. In between songs Mick joked and bounced around on stage, obviously delighted with ‘The Others’, the Sydney-based band of garage rock revivalists, one generation his junior. The small but enthusiastic audience returned the love by dancing, clapping and screaming for more.
I caught a remarkable show in January by Arizona band Calexico at the Hi Fi Bar. Calexico have no fewer than six members, featuring the usual guitar / bass / drums, plus two trumpets, steel guitar, glockenspiel and accordion. This will be in the ‘gigs of the year’ list, it was Latino-laced country with souring trumpets and too many musical parts to put into words, other than just this one… ‘wonderful’.
At the start of the year, the Rockabilly Psychosis was held at the Step Inn with The Vaudevillains, The Sugarshakers and Captain Twilight & The Six Shooters. You can read an online review here from Nova FM: www.novafm.com.au/nova1069/Article_GIG-REVIEW-Rockabilly-Psychosis_97074.
February’s Brisbane Blues Festival saw a thousand music fans fill the Jubilee Hotel, for a nine hour show of bluesy acts over two stages. Highlight for rockabilly fans was the Trophy Brides who were really well received with their mid century tunes and I don’t think anyone even realised they don’t employ a drummer. Doug Wilshire & The Tailspinners put in a great set and had the audience dancing to their vintage rockin’ tunes. Warren Earl flew into town for this gig, as well as a hastily arranged afternoon at The Joynt, where the fraternity of Brisbane rockabilly musos joined together for an excellent afternoon of music.
A few weeks back I caught the Jeff Bridges movie Crazy Heart, a fictional tale of Bad Blake, a hard living country singer in the waning stages of his music career. This is no epic, but Crazy Heart gets close to the bone and Bridges did win an Oscar for his role. Jeff Bridges & Colin Farrell perform original songs that form the story and they sound pretty good. Bad Blake looks a bit like an older Waylon Jennings, and the movie depicts the b-grade gig scenes realistically. Keep an eye out for the DVD.
Massive turnout for Twilight Hot Rod Show
The third annual Twilight Hot Rod Show was an absolute hit at its new home at Rocklea Showground.
The event has traditionally been held on the Sunday afternoon before Australia Day. Judging by the turnout this year, this day has become the January roll call for the kustom kulture crowd, as one thousand fans filled the grounds for the Twilight event.
The weather was at the top end of the scale, with the mercury climbing into the low 30s. Over one hundred vehicles assembled at Rocklea for the show with the bright sunshine sending blinding beams of light off every chromed fin and bumper. Amongst the show display were Aussie and American classics, hot rods, rat rods, lowriders, pick ups, kustoms, plus a caravan for the domestic types and a hearse for the weary.
The music at Twilight was top notch as expected. The arvo kicked into gear with some rockin’ sets from The Ten Fours, followed up by the boppin’ 50s sounds of Danny and The Cosmic Tremors. Final band was the Pat Capocci Combo, who filled the dance floor and added to the festivities with some cool headgear, bass player Jon in a fez, drummer Goat in a pirate’s hat and Pat in a way cool sombrero.
The new location of the Rocklea Showground ticked all the right boxes, including ample space to get around, public parking, plenty of shade and a real old school bar area. The vibe on the day was wonderful; everyone seemed so happy and relaxed.

Rockabilly Bop #5
It’s great to see rockabilly festivals in the northern hemisphere employing the services of Australian bands. The number of Aussie bands performing for international audiences is certainly growing.
Screamin’ Festival in Spain has signed up the Pat Capocci Combo, Danny & The Cosmic Tremors & The Ezra Lee Show for their upcoming rockabilly weekend in May.
Before heading off to sunny Barcelona, the three bands are performing a whirlwind tour across the east coast.
You can catch them all at the next Rockabilly Bop at the Holland Park Bowls Club on Saturday April 24. This will be one hell of a going away party, so be sure to get along for a big fix of live rockabilly.

The 11th Annual GreazeFest Kustom Kulture Festival
Friday July 30 to Sunday August 1, 2010 www.greazefest.com
The GreazeFest is full blown weekend of hot rods, rockabilly music, vintage bikes, lowrider cycles, low brow art, vintage fashions, tattoos, pinstripers. This is the big weekend to hang out with your pals and dig this thing we call 'kustom kulture'.
New GreazeFest Venue - Rocklea Showground
All GreazeFest events are now being held at Rocklea Showground. After the sensational response to the Twilight Hot Rod Show, we have decided to move all GreazeFest events to the new site at Rocklea. That means we won’t be holding any shows at the previously announced Jubilee Hotel.
Rocklea Showground has been the venue of numerous club displays and swap meets over the years and should be familiar to most local hot rodders. The Rocklea site is handy to major arterial roads and has a large vehicle display area accessible via two driveways. There is also a public parking area for non-show vehicles in the adjacent school, plus the grounds are close to bus and train services.
We are very excited about the change of venue and are confident the Rocklea Showground will provide everything we need and more, for a much bigger and better GreazeFest.
Address: Rocklea Showground, corner Ipswich Road Service Road and Goburra Street, Rocklea
Friday & Saturday nights (July 30 & 31) in Showground Bar:
The Showground Bar is the same area that showcased the bands during the Twilight Hot Rod Show in January. The large space features an enormous performance area with a large timber dance floor. The bar has real-deal old-skool charm and excellent sight lines to the stage.
Sunday Hot Rod Show (Aug 1) at Rocklea Showground entire site:
The Hot Rod Show on Sunday will be sprawling over the entire showground site at Rocklea. The main section of the Hot Rod Show will be in the Show Ring, which will also house the Low Brow Art Show, the outdoor live music stage, the enormous range of kool market stalls, food and drink outlets and more.
The new venue for the Hot Rod Show is roughly four times the size of the previous GreazeFest location so we're going to make the most of this space to bring you a sensational day of entertainment.

Deke Dickerson & The Ecco-Fonics
It is an absolute pleasure to announce that Deke Dickerson & The Ecco-Fonics will be headlining the GreazeFest Kustom Kulture Festival. Deke Dickerson is a multi-talented musical marvel, an all round entertainer. This will be Deke’s second visit to GreazeFest. Deke first visited Australia in 2002 to perform at GreazeFest, back in its early years at The Fishbowl in Redcliffe. As well as performing his own dynamic show, Deke played double bass in The Planet Rockers at what became a legendary year of the GreazeFest.
Joining Deke for this year’s show is Ecco-Fonic drummer Chris ‘Sugarballs’ Sprague and local bassman Jon Flynn. Readers would know Jon from his Australian bands, Men Into Space, and The Pat Capocci Combo. Jon Flynn is a bona-fide Ecco-Fonic, having performed with Deke for four tours across the USA, including backing legends such as Scotty Moore and Billy Lee Riley at the revered Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans.
We are very excited to welcome Deke and Sugarballs back to Australia to join Jon for an Ecco-Fonics reunion at GreazeFest.
Two Music Stages
This year we are assembling the music over two stages, one inside and one outside.
Licensed Indoor Stage - Live bands and DJs will be shakin' on Friday night, Saturday night and all day Sunday in the Rocklea Showground Bar. We'll also be installing a big timber dance floor for all your hip shakin' antics.
Outdoor All Ages Stage - For the Sunday, we will set up the second stage within the Hot Rod Show in the Show Ring. This stage will be all-ages, it will also have a dance floor, plus there'll be rockin' bands and DJs all day long. This is the stage where we will feature the trophy presentations, as well as more entertainment to be announced.

Low Brow Art Show
Pinstripe - Tiki - Airbrush - Ink - Oils - Acrylics - Pinup - Auto - Tattoo
We have a HUGE Low Brow Art Show planned for the 2010 at the new venue. Each year, the show has grown and grown, so we have expanded the space again to accommodate the extra art displays.
The same set up method will apply for this year's show, artists simply bring up to three pieces (fewer if they are oversized) in a 'ready to hang' condition, to the GreazeFest Art Show marquee on Sunday at 9am. There will be GreazeForce team members at the show hanging the pieces and a show card system for writing up your details. All submissions go in the running for one of two 'Boss Artist' awards. More info here: www.greazefest.com/artshow.html
Kool Markets
Market sites are open for booking and are approaching the full mark.
Patrons can expect the biggest display of markets that we have ever assembled for GreazeFest. Around one hundred market stalls will encircle the Show Ring bringing you all sorts of goodies including rockabilly music, vintage and repro clothing, 50s bric-a-brac, vintage corsetry and accessories, hot rod gear, temporary and real tattoos, photography and hair styling.
Vendors, you can submit your market application online. There is a site diagram with the remaining sites indicated. The remaining sites change daily and the site plan contains the latest availability.
At the time of writing this Roundup, there are 10 open air sites left and 8 marquee sites remaining.
All the info you need for your booking is here: www.greazefest.com/markets.html
Accommodation
There is a solid selection of motels and accommodation options close to Rocklea Showground. We have listed 15 options on the Travel page on the GreazeFest web site, along with contact details. As always, please don't leave your bookings until the last minute. Motels have a habit of filling up, that's their goal in business, so make sure you get in early to book a room that suits you. www.greazefest.com/accomm.html
Hot Rod Show
The Rocklea site will feature two hot rod display areas:
Show Ring - this is the main show area and it's at least twice the size of our previous hot rod display area. The Show ring is a large grassy oval surrounded by a race track. The Show Ring will feature hundreds of display vehicles, plus the outdoor music stage, the Low Brow Art Show, food and refreshment stalls, plus the entire ring will be encircled by a hundred kool market stalls.
South Field - this is the grassy field in the south-west corner of the showground (where we held the Twilight Hot Rod Show vehicles). This field will feature fun rides for the kids, plus food outlets, as well as any display vehicles that are unable to fit into the Show Ring.
All the details and site plans for the Hot Rod Show are available online, check it out here: www.greazefest.com/carshow.html

New Rules for Hot Rod Show
Pre-Registration
The hot rod show is adopting two changes to the entry process for display vehicles. We’ve resisted imposing rules on entrants at the GreazeFest for ten years. Considering the huge interest in the GreazeFest and the entire hot rod scene in recent years, the time has arrived to tighten things up. The changes are in the interests of public safety and it will result in a better show all ‘round. There are just two ‘rules’ to remember:
1 - All show vehicles must pre-register to display their vehicle/s in the Show Ring. 2 - All show vehicles must remain stationary between 9am and 3pm.
The rule of remaining stationary particularly applies to mopeds. If you are planning on bringing in a treadley with a motor attached, you can forget about riding it once you get inside the grounds at GreazeFest. Just display it, simple as that.
Club displays are welcome, but all vehicles must pre-register to allow adequate display space.
Entry prices for the hot rod show are $20 (car & driver) in advance or $25 at the gate.
Passengers and walk in patrons are the same price ie $20 in advance or $25 at the gate.
GreazeFest Awards:
All pre-registered vehicles go in the running for the following GreazeFest Awards and we've added some new categories:
King Rat (chosen rat rod) King Rod (chosen hot rod) King Kustom (chosen custom) King Classic (chosen pre-1970 classic) King Aussie (chosen pre-1970 Australian) Trophy Queen (chosen gal driver) King Choice (voted people’s choice) King Ride (chosen motorbike) King Lowrider (chosen cycle) King Kroozer (chosen longest distance)
Award presentation is approximately 2.00pm at the Outdoor Stage.
